End of Summer Bash
September 15, 2018

Montana Air Adventures
S27
Kalispell, Montana

As summer rapidly slips from our fingers, hang on to it a little longer and come enjoy an exhilarating day in the Flathead Valley. During the day, the valley is your oyster. This is your opportunity to explore what we have to offer! Take a quick trip up into Glacier Park or visit downtown Kalispell for a fun day of browsing our local shops. When the day winds down, come back to the airport for an exciting evening. Montana Air Adventures will be hosting a barbecue accompanied by a local band for your enjoyment. Need ideas on what to do, give our office a call and we will help you plan your eventful day. Timing during the day is based off you and your schedule. The BBQ will begin around 6PM.

Our airport was on the verge of getting shutdown. After a large volume of work from the owner of Kalispell City Airport, we gained the city's vote on keeping it here for at least another 40 years, but only if we can meet the city's needs and make this airport an attraction everyone will want to see. Montana Air Adventures has been voted to take charge of the airport and make sure needs are met.

5-Valleys MPA Hangar Celebration of Flight Dinner
December 17, 2016

Homestead Helicopter Hangar
MSO
Missoula, MT

December 17, 1903, is the date that the Wright Brothers made their historic first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, NC. On the 100th anniversary of that flight in 2003, EAA Chapter 517 and MPA Five Valleys Hangar jointly sponsored a Celebration of Flight dinner here in Missoula that was attended by more than 100 people. Every December 17 since then, we have continued to have a dinner on that date to celebrate the joys of flying.

We had hoped to have this year’s Celebration of Flight dinner in the new EAA hangar being built at the Missoula Airport, but we have just learned the hangar completion date has been pushed in to January. Since this year’s meal is being catered by Two Sisters, we will still have dinner at the airport, but the location now will be the new Homestead Helicopter hangar. There is ample parking available, no stairs to negotiate, and no airport security gate to deal with. More detailed information will be provided in an email to EAA 517 and MPA FVH members in early December.

In the meantime, we would like to get “a head count” of who is planning to attend this dinner. The meal will be served buffet style and consist of various Italian dishes. There will be a bar hosted by MPA Five Valleys Hangar beginning at 6:00 PM. Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM.
The cost is $25.00 per person. Please make your checks out to EAA Chapter 517, Inc.

If you are planning to attend, please send a short email to Sherry Rossiter, our dinner coordinator, at ssrossiter@aol.com. If you are ready to send payment for the dinner, please send your check to Sherry Rossiter, P.O. Box 16446, Missoula, MT 59808.

Lincoln BBq
July 10, 2013

Lincoln airport
S69
Lincoln, MT

Well, it’s that time of year again (actually this has always been in June in the past, but bad weather finally won out and I moved it). The annual Lincoln Airport BBQ that I host each year for Helena’s Vigilante Hangar of the Montana Pilots Association will this year be on the second Wednesday of July (the 10th). As hangar owners at Lincoln Airport, owners of airstrips in Lincoln Valley, or just my friends and neighbors, you and your families are all invited to attend. I will provide BBQed hamburgers and hot dogs with all of the fixings, potato salad, chili beans, Liz’s chocolate cake, ice cream, and water. If you want to bring something to share with other attendees, you are welcome to do that also. I will be at my hangar at the airport from about 3:00 PM on with food ready to serve at 5:00 PM for early arrivals. Most arrivals will be between 5:00 and 6:00 PM. Fly-in or drive in, you are all welcome, so please come and enjoy.

An email reply RSVP would be appreciated if you think you will be coming letting me know how many persons so that I can plan the food accordingly. Hope to see you there!

Kalispell City Airport Support
May 7, 2012

Kalispell 7:00 pm
S27
Kalispell, MT

I am writing to you today to enlist your support for the Kalispell City Airport (S27). Next Monday is an important meeting at our Kalispell City Council. They will be taking public comment on whether or not to update the airport. This airport is very important to our area both in terms of the resource it provides our local and transient pilot community, but it also has a significant economic impact to the south side of Kalispell. This airport has been a fixture here since 1929 and is is one of those quaint, beautiful airports for which Montana is known so well. It is one of the few that is actually within walking distance to many of our local eateries and hotels.

Given that this airport has a few vocal detractors, I am asking you to please consider joining us next Monday at 7 p.m. to support our local airport. I believe it would be in our best interest to show city council how important it is, how often you use it and that your visits support our community financially

US Forest Service Draft Planning Rule Deadline
May 16, 2011

Montana Pilots Association call to action

To all pilots who want continued access to National Forest lands and waters:

This is a reminder that you have only until May 16th to comment on this important issue.

The United States Forest Service is in the process of revising its entire land management planning process. This has not been done since 1982. The USFS has held round table meetings throughout the country to gain public input. RAF representatives have attended most of these sessions. Following extensive public input, a draft plan (RULE) was published in the Federal Register on February 14, 2011, Vol. 76, No. 30, page 8480. Following a long preamble, the actual draft RULE begins on page 8514. To read the entire document and to learn more on the process, go to: www.fs.usda.gov/goto/planningrule

Met Tower Comment Period
February 4, 2011

Proposed Met Tower Marking and Lighting Guidance: the FAA is considering revising its current Advisory Circular on Obstruction Marking and Lighting to include guidance for Meteorological Evaluation Towers. These towers are erected in remote and rural areas, often are less than 200 feet above ground level, and fall outside of FAA regulations governing tall structures and their impact on navigable airspace. The proposed marking guidance would enhance the conspicuity of the towers and address the safety related concerns of low level agricultural operations. The FAA seeks comment on the proposed guidance on or before February 4, 2011. To read the complete document, FAA-2010-1326-001 go to www.regulations.gov

MSO Airport Conference Room

The celebrated movie “Red Skies Over Montana” starring Richard Widmark will be shown on a 60 inch flat screen TV at 7 PM on Monday, January 17th, in the Missoula Airport conference room. This movie first premiered in Missoula on January 20, 1952.
Dennis Sain, who was a young boy at the time the movie was made in Montana, will be present at the January 17th showing to help narrate the movie by pointing out where specific scenes were shot and offering other bits of historical perspective. It is definitely interesting to see how the “smokejumpers” operated almost 60 years ago.
All MPA-FVH members, EAA 517 members, spouses, and friends are invited to attend this very special event. There will also be popcorn provided to enhance your viewing pleasure.

Five Valleys Hangar Party
December 17,

Holiday Inn - Parkside

Missoula, MT

EAA Chapter 517 and MPA Five Valleys Hangar will again have a joint dinner event on
Friday, December 17, to help us get into the holiday spirit as well as to commemorate the 107th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered flight.
This year's dinner will again be held at the Holiday Inn - Downtown (200 South Pattee Street) in Missoula beginning with a no-host cocktail hour at 6 PM. We will be in a private room in the lower level of the hotel.
A two entree chicken and sirloin buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 PM followed by a short program and the traditional (and often very entertaining) "White Elephant" gift exchange. Participation in the gift exchange is optional.
Like everything else, the cost of this year's dinner has increased to $24 per person. However, if this year's meal is as good as last year's was, it is worth the splurge. Please make your checks out to EAA Chapter 517 and mail them to Sherry Rossiter, P.O. Box 16446, Misoula, MT 59808, no later than December 13.
If you have questions, please call Sherry at 542-5177.

Russian Flat Work Session
August 21 thru  22, 2010

Russian Flat Airfield

Weather permitting, the Russian Flat Airstrip will be open for the August 21/22 work session. Century Paving finished up on Wednesday August 11 with everything that has to be done to open the runway. This has been a huge undertaking and has finally come to fruition through the efforts of the Montana Pilots Association and funding by the Recreational Aviation Foundation. Century Paving of Lewistown has donated labor and equipment to the project and without them the project still wouldn't be finished. The runway has been mowed and windsocks will be up by the weekend of the work session. Just to give you and idea of what needs to be done:

Some grass needs to be seeded--Jeff Patnode in charge

The toilet has some settling around it that has to be filled in--Dan Prill in charge

The campground needs to be cleaned up--John McKenna in charge

The gates need to be installed on the airplane corral--Tim Robertson in charge

Century Paving will provide steaks for Saturday night so please RSVP to Tim Robertson at trobertson@centurypaving.com or Jeff Patnode at jeffrey.patnode@gmail.com. If you don't RSVP you may find yourself without a Steak.

There is no water so you will have to bring your own.

Russian Flat is at about 6400' elevation and about 3000' long. Landing to the west is uphill and is the preferred way. Takeoff to the East. There are two windsocks, one north of the runway on the west end and one south of the runway on the east end. It's location is N46o 43' 28.24" W110o 24' 41.07". If you Google Earth the runway you can see it there. As always you need to research the airstrip for yourself and determine your airplanes capabilities. Nose wheel planes can go in but please be careful. Call intentions on the 122.90 frequency.

If you drive go from Utica to Sapphire Village and then follow the main road to Russian Flat. It is about 29 miles. Turn in at the main campground and follow the post and pole road to the aircraft campground. It can easily be seen from the main gravel road. We have a permit for the post and pole road travel.

There are still cattle in the area so the airplanes will have to be parked in the airplane corral. There are no tie downs available so you need to bring your own. This can be a windy area so make sure you have them.

Please bring shovels and rakes, bug dope, and sun screen and come have some fun at the newest airstrip in the US.

Missouri Breaks Work Session
May 15,

Missouri Breaks Airstrips

MT

Mark the weekend of May 15, 2010 on your calendars. There will be a work party(s) in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument to remove sagebrush from three of the six airstrips that have been approved in the final Monument Resource Management Plan (RMP). The three airstrips are:

-Cow Creek 47*56’51”N, 109*00’29”W
-Black Butte North 47*50’44”N, 109*11’13”W
-Bullwhacker 47*50’52”N, 109*05’58”W

All three airstrips run approximately east and west. There is at least 1500’ usable runway at this time. There are no windsocks.

The plan is to remove all the sagebrush from the original foot print of the three airstrips, which will provide at least 2000’ of usable runway. Only hand tools are allowed for this work. Polaskis, or similar tools, work best (cutting the sage off just below ground level) and a pitchfork is needed to remove the sage off the runway. For those of you that do not have a Polaski, there will be loaners available. So, not having the proper tool is no excuse for not showing up. Bullwhacker and Black Butte North are the airstrips that need the most attention.

Arrive early on Saturday morning at one of the strips, spend the day cutting sagebrush and then finish up the evening with a BBQ at Cow Creek, hosted by Winifred pilot Ralph Rogers. Some of us will be camping at Cow Creek.
Be sure to bring plenty of drinking water.

If the weekend forecast is for rainy weather, the work session will be delayed to the following weekend. On May 14th I will send out to MPA members an email with any final details. Do not land in the Breaks if the ground is wet.

The Montana Pilots Association has worked long and hard to keep these airstrips available for public use and having them included on the final Monument RMP. You are asked to be considerate of other Monument visitors. Do not fly low over the Missouri River.
